| Story of Stuff Wins 2008 SXSW Web Award |
Austin, Texas
The Story of Stuff (www.storyofstuff.com), a fast-paced, fact-filled tour of our consumer-driven culture, was named the best educational website by a panel of judges at the South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Conference Sunday night. The SXSW web awards "uncover the best new sites" among "hundreds and hundreds" of submissions from "innovative web designers and developers from across the globe." The Story of Stuff takes visitors on a provocative 20-minute tour from resource extraction to iPod incineration, exposing the real costs of our culture's use-it and lose-it approach to stuff. The film's writer and narrator, Annie Leonard , is an activist who, after asking "Where does all the stuff we buy come from, and where does it go when we throw it out?" has spent the past 10 years traveling the globe to answer her question. The film was produced by Free Range Studios , the makers of other highly popular web-based films such as "The Meatrix " and "Grocery Store Wars". Funding for the project came from the Sustainability Funders (The Funders Workgroup for Sustainable Production and Consumption) and Tides Foundation.
