This year, Americans have been focusing on two daunting issues, a warming globe and a shrinking economy pushing millions toward poverty. In the past, many have believed that there is a choice between a healthy environment and a healthy economy. The conventional wisdom is that you've got to pick one. But today, both of these problems have become so pressing that this trade-off mentality must be left behind for something new.
In 2008, Free Range is proud to introduce a Gratitude Grant award that will assist a group putting forth a bold and realistic plan to stop global warming and end poverty. Green For All and its Executive Director Van Jones are at the forefront of developing a green economy that will create millions of jobs that will build America's sustainable future. The concept is simple: America needs "green collar" workers to build our wind, solar and sustainable systems. People facing poverty need these good jobs and to be partners in revitalizing America's economy. Put the two together by training those who have been left behind to do these jobs and we've got a real chance to solve our two biggest problems with one brilliant solution.
While we are thrilled with this new partnership, we regret that we had to set aside so many excellent proposals. We'd like to offer huge thanks to all of you who applied for this year's grant for your hard work and dedication to so many important issues. In fact, so many of you applied that we find our job choosing a single project to be near impossible.
That's why, in response to the nearly 300 applicants we received this year, we are now planning to launch an additional grant in 2009 based on the People's Choice. With the People's Choice Grant, you will have the opportunity to post your application online where our combined communities can vote for their favorite proposed project. This gives 2008 proposals another chance at being funded and brings attention from far flung sources to these amazing ideas.
We will be in touch with more information to invite your participation. Thanks again for being part of our community.
