Gratitude Grant FAQ

What Exactly Does the Grant Offer?

The Gratitude Grant is a donation program for non-profit organizations that provides up to $15,000 worth of Free Range's design and/or strategic services (75-115 hours depending on the exact services awarded). In one application, organizations may apply for one service or several-- whatever is needed by the applicant.

How Are Recipients Selected?

Our goal is to award this grant to the organization(s) whose goals can be furthered the most from our services. We are inspired by a range of progressive causes including human rights, the environment, civil liberties, and social justice. While there are no specific projecs or groups we limit the grant to, keep these general guidelines in mind as you apply.

> > > We like to support projects that further an entire movment or push an issue many organizations are working on. For example, if we got two applications-- one to redesign an organization's website and a second to design the website of a campaign many groups were involved in, we would be likely to favor the second applicant.

> > > We look for innovation and challenge. This can come in many forms- perhaps you are at the cutting edge, addressing an issue that most others (possibly including Free Range) have not. Or perhaps you've got the need for a service that lets us push our own creative boundries.

    > > > We admire folks with a plan. The more you've thought through your project and applicaiton, the better you will come across. Take your time. Spell check! We suggest working on your application offline and then uploading it to the form once you finish.

How Many Grants Are Awarded Each Year?

The answer to this question depends on the ideas that applicants submit. If the best-fitting submission falls into a time intensive category such as Flash animation, we may award one grant to one organization. If, on the other hand, the best ideas fall into areas such as print or web design, we may choose more than one recipient.

Also, if we find that several organizations submit applications on a similar topic, we may work with these organizations to create one product that serves multiple groups. This was the case with The Meatrix, which helped a coalition of groups working to curb abuses in factory farming.

Can I Apply for More than One Free Range Service?

If your project falls under more than one design or communications service (i.e. it?s a campaign that involves a website and a printed brochure) yes, you should apply for more than one Free Range service. In short, apply for what would make your idea the most effective and compelling.

What If I Don't Get the Grant?

Don't despair! You are welcome to re-apply for the grant for as many years as you like.

In the meantime, we encourage you to contact us regarding your ideas. Perhaps we can find a way to make your goal a reality through an innovative solution that meets your budget and in-house capabilities. In the past we have also linked like-minded organizations to pool their resources and make a splash that they could not afford to make on their own. Alternatively, we may be able to support your efforts to find funding for your communications needs by providing you with information for inclusion in your grant proposals.
