In 2007, USA for UNHCR (The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) decided to focus humanity's attention on Darfur during World Refugee Day. The organization asked Free Range to help make tangible the vital work they have been doing in supporting more than 240,000 refugees now living in Chad. We knew our designs had to appeal to readers on a deep emotional level to cut through the noise and fatigue around the tragic news from Darfur. By bringing faces close to the camera and contrasting black and white photography with bright, bold color, we emphasized both the tragedy inherent in the situation and the hope provided by UNHCR for those who have fled.
